What's the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?

Tash Hagan

Understanding the difference between mineral sunscreen vs chemical sunscreen helps you choose the right protection for your skin type and lifestyle.

Mineral Sunscreen

Also called physical sunscreen, mineral formulas use ingredients like:

  • Zinc oxide
  • Titanium dioxide

How It Works:

Mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and reflects and scatters UV rays.

Pros:

  • Starts working immediately
  • Less likely to irritate sensitive skin
  • Often reef-safe
  • Broad-spectrum protection

Cons:

  • May leave a white cast
  • Can feel thicker on the skin

Chemical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens use active ingredients like:

  • Avobenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Octocrylene

How It Works:

They absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin.

Pros:

  • Lightweight texture

  • Absorbs easily

  • No white residue

Cons:

  • Can irritate sensitive skin

  • Requires 15–20 minutes before sun exposure

Which is better?

There’s no universal “better” option, only what’s better for your skin.

  • Choose mineral sunscreen if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin
  • Choose chemical sunscreen if you prefer invisible, lightweight wear

The most important rule? Use one consistently.

About the Founder

Tash Hagan is the founder of Stil Suncare. After more than a decade working in fashion and e-commerce (including a stint as Art Director at Boden) Tash turned her focus to skincare after years of managing Crohn's disease taught her just how much ingredients matter.

Frustrated by mainstream sunscreens that triggered her symptoms, she set out to create the mineral SPF she couldn't find on the shelf: gentle, naturally-formulated, and free from harsh chemicals. Stil was born from that search ,made for her, and for anyone else who needs suncare they can trust.

You can read more from Tash on LinkedIn where she shares her thoughts weekly on running a business for the first time in the suncare category.
